Apple HomePad smart display with sleek metal base and 6 inch screen on a kitchen countertop

Apple HomePad smart display could outshine Google Nest Hub and Amazon Echo Show

Apple teases a new smart display for October

Apple has announced its next major event for 13 October and rumours suggest the company will unveil more than just a refreshed HomePod mini and Apple TV 4K. Bloomberg reporter Mark Gurman says Apple is preparing to launch its first smart display, a device that has been nicknamed the Apple HomePad. The internal code name J490 points to a compact 6 inch square screen that sits on a countertop or can be wall‑mounted with a variant called J491.

Design cues from the iMac G4

The HomePad is said to echo the iconic iMac G4 from 2002, featuring a domed base and a polished metal arm that holds the display. A thin bezel makes the unit as slim as an iPhone, and a subtle edge‑light activates when a user approaches, similar to the proximity sensors on the Amazon Echo Show 10.

Personalised experience for every family member

Apple plans to use voice recognition to identify individual household members and present a customised interface. The device will integrate native Apple apps such as Calendar, Messages, Photos, FaceTime, Notes, Reminders, Music and Podcasts. Users will be able to control HomeKit accessories, adjust thermostats, start FaceTime calls with an iPhone 15 Pro or an iPad Air M2, and stream music from Apple Watch Series 10.

Potential larger model with robotic arm

In addition to the 6 inch version, Gurman reports a larger 9 inch model that includes a motorised arm capable of moving the screen automatically. This concept mirrors the older Meta Portal smart screens and could offer a dynamic viewing experience for video calls or cooking tutorials.

How it stacks up against Google Nest Hub and Amazon Echo Show

Google has not introduced a major update to its Nest Hub line for years, and the current Nest Hub Max still relies on basic photo slideshows and voice queries. Amazon’s Echo Show 8 provides similar functionality but lacks deep integration with iOS devices. If Apple delivers the HomePad as described, it could persuade users who already own an iPhone 15 Pro, Apple Watch Series 10, or MacBook Air M2 to replace their existing Google Nest Hub or Echo Show.

Will the HomePad replace existing smart displays?

Only a formal announcement will confirm pricing and availability, but the combination of a sleek design, personalised Siri AI, and seamless Apple ecosystem integration makes the HomePad a compelling contender. For households that already use Apple devices, the ability to start a FaceTime call with a single tap or view photos from an iPhone 15 Pro could be a decisive factor.

Looking ahead

With less than two weeks until Apple’s event, the tech community is watching closely. Whether the HomePad will become a must‑have addition or remain a niche product depends on how Apple positions it against the established Google Nest Hub and Amazon Echo Show line‑ups. For now, the leak has sparked plenty of excitement among Apple fans and smart‑home enthusiasts alike.
